ForTheWards helps medical students and residents practice patient conversations, history-taking, and clinical reasoning with AI patients. Learners receive feedback after each encounter, and faculty can assign courses and review performance.
Why ForTheWards exists
Learners need time to work through difficult conversations, make mistakes, and try again. Finding that time within a busy curriculum can be difficult.
ForTheWards gives programs another way to make practice part of everyday learning. Learners can work through simulated encounters in their browser, alongside the teaching and standardized-patient sessions their program already provides.
Education should be accessible to all. A program's budget shouldn't decide whether its learners get to practice, so ForTheWards is free to use.
Who builds ForTheWards
ForTheWards was founded by Slaton Case, MD, a physician board-certified in internal medicine, to give learners more chances to rehearse the conversations they will soon have with real patients, families and colleagues.
Dr. Case designs the scenarios, with AI support for supporting details. Automated checks review each case for structure and consistency, and every scenario is trialled before it is published. Learners at the University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine practice with ForTheWards, and their programs' feedback shapes new courses.
Free, and open about what it costs
There are no per-learner fees, subscriptions or sales contracts. Programs get every course, unlimited assignments and reporting. Faculty can choose courses for their learners and review participation and performance in one place.
Running ForTheWards isn't free: the AI voices, conversations and feedback cost about $1–2 per hour of practice. We share that openly. Programs that can help cover it are welcome to, but cost should never be the reason a learner goes without practice. ForTheWards is supported by the University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine and the HMSA Center for Learning Innovation.
